Puerto Vallarta Malecón Construction 2025: What Visitors Should Know

If you’re planning a trip to Puerto Vallarta anytime soon, let me warn you now: the city is under construction, baby. And, yes — that includes the iconic Malecón. And, it can be VERY loud at at times… (As of November 2025).

Future rendering of what it will look like along the Malecon (by the McDonald’s and Hotel Rosita)

In my latest walk-through video (above), I took you along for a casual stroll from Zona Romántica down to the Malecón to show exactly what’s going on. Think of it as your real-time update on what’s changing, what’s improving, and what you should mentally prepare for when you visit.

The Malecón, for anyone who doesn’t know, is basically Puerto Vallarta’s heartbeat. It’s the boardwalk where everything happens — food vendors, performers, art, people-watching, sunsets, chaos, magic… all of it.

And right now? She’s getting a facelift.

So what’s changing?

A LOT.

There’s resurfacing, new planters, refreshed walkways, moved seating areas, and — most notably — a major expansion happening near the McDonald’s and Hidalgo Park area. That entire stretch is being redesigned to become pedestrian-only, meaning no car traffic, more walking space, better flow, and overall a more elevated experience.

This is what that area will kind of look like.

They’re also installing new drainage systems (because yes, that area loves to flood), and the updates are happening fast. One section alone was completed in about two weeks, and the city claims the entire project should wrap by the end of December. Do we believe that timeline? Let’s just say… I’m cautiously optimistic.

The good, the messy, and the real

More rendering of the possibility!

While it’s looking fresher and more beautiful, you will hear construction noise. You will see cones. You will experience a bit of chaos.

Balance.

But honestly? The improvements are noticeable. Areas that once felt worn down or janky are now looking revitalized, cleaner, and much more aligned with the energy Puerto Vallarta deserves.

Is PV still safe though?

This question always pops up, so let me say this clearly: I have never felt unsafe here. As a Black man living in Mexico, that matters. No overt racism, no wild hostility, just a genuinely welcoming, gay-friendly, family-friendly city. Of course, mind your business, stay aware, and don’t move reckless — but that advice applies anywhere in the world. Read more about safety here.

When is the best time to visit?

Right now. Truly.

November through March is elite PV weather. Low humidity, minimal rain, great vibes. The kind of weather that makes you forget your problems and consider selling everything you own to become a beach person.

Final thoughts

The Malecón isn’t being destroyed — it’s being evolved. Expanded. Reimagined. And while change can feel a little chaotic, what’s coming looks promising. More walkable space, better infrastructure, and an even more beautiful stretch of oceanfront for locals and visitors to enjoy.

And if you want the full tea on what to do, where to eat, how to stay safe, and how to actually enjoy PV like a seasoned local? Yes, I’m going to say it again — my Puerto Vallarta guide truly covers it all.

You’re welcome 😌 Have fun and be SAFE!
