Where to Stay in Ninh Binh: Tam Coc vs Trang An vs the City
- Splurge: Emeralda Resort Ninh Binh
- Rice field views: Tam Coc Garden Resort
- Best mid-range: Ninh Binh Hidden Charm Hotel & Resort
- Lotus ponds + countryside: Aravinda Resort Ninh Binh
Let me be real with y'all: I did NOT nail where I stayed in Ninh Binh. I booked a small homestay, and they just did not have it together. [NICK: one or two lines on what went wrong, in your words.] Lesson learned: WHERE you stay in Ninh Binh matters more than you'd think.
So this isn't a "here's where I stayed" post. It's a "here's where I'd stay next time" post. I did the research I wish I'd done the first time, and rode around enough to know which areas actually make sense. If you haven't read it yet, my full Ninh Binh guide covers everything I did there.
And the other confusing part when you're planning: Tam Coc? Trang An? Ninh Binh city? The map makes it all look right next to each other. (It kinda is... and kinda isn't.) Let me break it down.
The Quick Answer
First time in Ninh Binh and want restaurants, bikes and boat rides close by? Stay in Tam Coc. Want peace, nature and early access to the Trang An boats? Stay near Trang An. Want a big resort moment? Look at the resorts out by Van Long Nature Reserve. Only passing through or catching an early train? Ninh Binh city works, but it's not where the magic is.
And plan for at least two nights. Ninh Binh is NOT a day trip if you want to actually enjoy it.
Tam Coc (Best for First-Timers)
Tam Coc is the little town most travelers end up in, and for good reason. You've got the Tam Coc boat rides through the rice fields, Mua Cave just up the road, a strip of cafรฉs and restaurants, and bike rentals everywhere. Most of the rice-field and lotus-pond hotels you see on Instagram are around here.
The trade-off is it's the most touristy part of Ninh Binh. It's still chill compared to Hanoi, but you'll see a lot more travelers here than anywhere else.
Best for: first-timers, couples, people who want to bike everywhere and have dinner options.
Skip it if: you want it SILENT at night.
Trang An (Best for Nature & Early Boat Rides)
Trang An is the UNESCO area with the big boat tour through the caves and karsts, and the area around it is greener, quieter and more spread out. Staying out here means you can get on the boats early before the tour buses from Hanoi roll in, which is a BIG deal.
You'll want a scooter or Grab to get around, and there are fewer restaurants within walking distance.
Best for: nature people, photographers, anybody who wants to beat the crowds.
Skip it if: you need things walkable.
Van Long & the Countryside (Best for Resorts)
A little further out, near Van Long Nature Reserve and the rural villages around it, is where the big resort stays are. Think traditional-style villas, pools, spas and views of the mountains with nobody around. You're about 20 to 30 minutes from Trang An and Tam Coc, so you'll be relying on the resort shuttle, a driver or Grab.
Best for: honeymoons, splurges, "I'm not leaving the pool" trips.
Skip it if: you want to pop out for street food.
Ninh Binh City (Best for Logistics Only)
The city itself is where the train station and a lot of the buses drop you. It's practical, cheaper and has local restaurants, but it doesn't have the views or the vibe. I'd only stay in the city if you're arriving late, leaving early, or on a super tight budget.
Best for: one-night stopovers, early trains.
Skip it if: you came for the karsts. That's the whole point of Ninh Binh.

Homestay or Hotel?
Homestays CAN be amazing in Vietnam: cheap, personal, home-cooked breakfast, hosts who actually live there. But my experience in Ninh Binh is exactly why I'd tell you to read the recent reviews carefully and make sure the place has a real booking system and replies to messages before you pay.
If I went back tomorrow? I'd book a hotel or a small resort in Tam Coc. You get the pool, the view from your balcony, and somebody who actually handles your bike rental and boat tickets. If it's a couples trip or a treat-yourself trip, book the resort. You deserve it.
Tips for Booking a Hotel in Ninh Binh
Stay at least two nights. One night is not enough to do Trang An, Mua Cave and Bai Dinh without rushing.
Check if bikes or scooters are included. A lot of places in Tam Coc lend bicycles for free.
Ask about transfers. Many hotels can arrange pickup from Hanoi or the Ninh Binh train station.
Watch the weekends. Vietnamese tourists flood in on weekends and holidays and prices go up.
Bring bug spray. Rice fields and lotus ponds are gorgeous, and the mosquitoes think so too.
- Trang An boat tour โ the one thing you cannot skip
- Mua Cave & Tam Coc โ the viewpoint + the rice field boats
- Bai Dinh Pagoda โ one of the biggest temple complexes in Vietnam
- Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi โ transport included if you're short on time
Getting to Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh is about two hours south of Hanoi. You can take the train to Ninh Binh station, a limousine van, or a sleeper bus. I break down the buses and limos I've taken in my Vietnam sleeper bus reviews. A lot of hotels will also arrange a transfer for you.
Motorbikes, typhoon season, street food roulette... Vietnam is AMAZING but stuff happens. I use SafetyWing because it's built for people who travel long-term and you can sign up even after you've already left home.
