Sometimes you just want a burger.

No tacos, no ceviche, no enchiladas — just that juicy…salty… packed with flavor BURGER.

Luckily, Puerto Vallarta’s burger scene is stacked with options. I am shook and in awe at just how good everything is here in town. I’ve yet to have a bad meal. And, since I am American, I know a good burger when I see one.

I like them more like sliders, juicy, and SPICY. So, we’re in luck. Make sure you read all the way through because at the end I will reveal my FAVORITE… And best of all, they also serve pizzas. WTF? Bonus land = Puerto Vallarta.

Whether you’re craving a classic gourmet patty, a crispy smash-style burger, or something with a twist, here are my top spots that always hit the craving just right… Let’s get into it.

Chris’ Burgers — The Classic Gourmet Favorite

My go-to order at Chris’ Burgers in Puerto Vallarta… That BBQ sauce is sooo good — kinda random but it tasted fire!

Food: 9/10 — This one’s for the true burger lovers. Chris’ Burgers delivers that perfect balance between juicy and hearty. The patty is thick — we’re talking a proper, hand-pressed burger that feels substantial. The only critique? The bread. It’s good, but it can be a little too much. Still, that meaty flavor makes up for it.

Vibe: Chris himself is what makes the spot so great. He’s warm, friendly, and genuinely cares about your experience. The service is personal, and it feels like you’re supporting someone who loves what they do.

Will I Go Again: Absolutely. This is my go-to when I’m really hungry and want something that feels more “restaurant burger” than “fast food.” It’s a sit-down, enjoy-your-bite kind of spot — definitely one of my favorite burger joints in town.

Derby Burger Bar — The Gourmet Twist (with Sweet Potato Fries!)

Food: 7/10 — Derby is the “gourmet” choice of the bunch. The burgers are flavorful and creative, with well-thought-out toppings and good portion sizes. What really stood out to me, though, were the sweet potato fries. They’re crispy, well-seasoned, and pair perfectly with their burgers.

Vibe: A little more elevated, kind of like your “let’s go for a proper dinner” burger spot. Great for a date night or a chill weekend lunch.

Will I Go Again: Sure — but if I’m being honest, it’s my third pick. It’s solid, but I prefer the punch of Slice & Smash or the comforting heft of Chris’.

Slice & Smash — The Addictive, Street-Style Smash Burger

Slice & Smash in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Food: 10/10 — This place is dangerously good. Slice & Smash is for the crispy, caramelized-edge crowd — the kind who knows the joy of that perfect “smash.” Think In-N-Out but wayyyyyy better. The patties are thin and salty in the best way possible, with melty cheese and soft buns that soak up all the flavor. It’s quick, it’s hot, and it’s basically crack in burger form. And, those onions… the lettuce (I don’t even like lettuce like that), and that sauce…. LORD. The owner laughs at me because I am there often. And, I always wash it all down with the Mexican coke. They also serve pizzas but I’ve yet to try that.

Vibe: Street-style and fast-paced. You’re not here for fine dining — you’re here because you’re walking by, smell that burger sizzle, and suddenly your day just got better. It’s the perfect grab-and-go meal, or a pre-night-out indulgence that never disappoints.

Will I Go Again: Without a doubt. If I could only eat one burger in Vallarta for the rest of my life, it’d be Slice & Smash. But sometimes he is closed so then I go to the other spots… LOL!

Final Rankings

  1. 🥇 Slice & Smash — Best for sliders, quick bites, and anyone who loves a smash burger. It’s the In-N-Out of Puerto Vallarta, and honestly addictive.

  2. 🥈 Chris’ Burgers — A thicker, more gourmet-style burger. Perfect when you want a sit-down meal and a classic taste.

  3. 🥉 Derby Burger Bar — Great for a casual dinner, especially if you’re into sweet potato fries.

Puerto Vallarta might be famous for its seafood and tacos, but don’t underestimate its burger scene. Whether you’re craving a quick bite after the beach or a full-on meal with a view, these three spots prove you can find burger bliss in paradise.
