Here’s What I Wish I Knew Before Moving to Mexico
If you’re planning to visit Puerto Vallarta—or even thinking about moving here—you’re in for a treat. After living here for over a year (and visiting many times before that), I’ve learned a few things that will make your trip or move smoother.
If you’d prefer to watch a video on this topic, please take a look at the video below:
1. Getting Around Puerto Vallarta
Transportation here is surprisingly easy once you understand the options. You can take Ubers, taxis, buses, and even water taxis to get around.
Airport tip: Ubers can’t yet pick up directly at the airport. You’ll need to cross the pedestrian bridge to meet your driver. A recent lawsuit will soon change that, but for now—walk across and request your ride from there. Read more about this here.

If you’re on a budget, the bus is only about 50 cents (yes, you read that right!). My favorite route runs from Zona Romántica to Boca de Tomatlán—perfect if you want to hike to Playa Las Ánimas or explore the nearby beaches.
2. Money & ATMs
Skip the random ATMs around town and use trusted banks like Santander or Banorte. Please, please, please pay in pesos… I talk more about that here:
Pro tip: When the ATM asks if you want to “accept conversion,” always decline. It’ll save you money on hidden exchange rates. I learned that the hard way!
3. What to Do in Puerto Vallarta
This city is packed with adventure. A few of my personal favorites:
Hike to Playa Las Ánimas: Start from Boca de Tomatlán and hike through the jungle to hidden beaches.
Day Trip to Sayulita or San Pancho: Two gorgeous surf towns north of Vallarta—perfect for a beach escape and local shopping.
ATV Tours: Ride through the jungle and up the mountains. It’s one of the best adrenaline rushes you can get here. My favorite is here.
Whale Watching: Season runs from November-March (may a little later). Book my favorite tour here.
Food Tours: Learn to make tortillas, taste authentic tacos, and explore Vallarta’s food scene with local guides.
Mirador Hike: The uphill climb is worth the view—it overlooks the entire bay.
4. How Expensive Is Puerto Vallarta?
Let’s retire the word “cheap,” okay? Food here is affordable—and you can eat incredible meals for less than $10 USD.
Eat like a local at taco stands, or treat yourself at fine-dining spots with ocean views. I actually created a Puerto Vallarta Restaurant Guide—check the link in my blog for my personal faves.
5. Whale-Watching Season
If you’re visiting between November/December and March, you’re in luck! You can literally see whales breaching right from Los Muertos Beach.
For an unforgettable experience, take a boat tour—you might even get an up-close encounter with a mama and her calf. Truly magical.
6. When to Visit
Puerto Vallarta shines year-round, but a few key times stand out:
November – March: Cooler weather and whale-watching season.
Late October – Early November: Día de Muertos celebrations—colorful, emotional, and full of local culture.
December – New Year’s: Nonstop fiestas, fireworks, and community energy.
May: Pride Festival! One of the most joyful events I’ve ever attended—packed with parades, beach parties, and love.

7. Is Puerto Vallarta Safe?
Short answer: Yes. I actually feel safer here than in many U.S. cities.
Of course, be smart—watch your surroundings, keep an eye on your things at bars or beaches, and trust your gut. The same travel rules apply everywhere.
As a Black queer man, I’ve felt welcomed, respected, and supported here. The LGBTQ+ community is strong and vibrant, especially in Zona Romántica.
