Where Black Gay Men Are Finding Love Abroad (2026 Guide)

So last week I gave y'all the list of 8 countries where we are NOT welcome, and my comments turned into a support group. Fair. That post was heavy.

But I refuse to leave you thinking the whole world is a "no." Because while everybody was arguing about Argentina, there's a quieter story happening: Black gay men are out here WINNING abroad. Falling in love. Building community. Getting chose. And yes — having a very good time on a Tuesday night, if you know what I mean.

So this is the redemption arc. Where are Black gay men actually finding love overseas? And — because y'all are grown and I'm not going to act brand new — where are the good hookup spots?

Two different maps. Let's do both.

Same rules as always: this is what travelers and expats consistently report plus my own two eyes. Your mileage may vary. Grown men decisions only.

PART ONE: Where the LOVE Is

These are the cities where Black gay men report actually dating — being seen as a whole person, not a novelty, not a fetish, not a spectacle. Community, second dates, meeting the friends. That energy.

🇲🇽 Mexico City

PV gets the headlines (we'll get there), but CDMX is where Black gay expats are actually building LIVES. The queer scene is big enough that you're not the only one in the room, the Black American expat community exploded after 2020 and never left, and Mexican dating culture is romance-forward — men will COURT you here. Zona Rosa is the gay center of gravity, but Condesa and Roma Norte are where the dates happen.

🏨 Gay-friendly stays:

  • The Red Tree House — legendary gay-owned B&B in Condesa; the evening wine hour is where friendships (and more) start

  • Andaz Mexico City Condesa — rooftop pool, walkable to everything, very queer-popular

  • Condesa DF — boutique, stylish, date-night energy

  • More gay-friendly hotels in Mexico City here.

🎟️ Do this:

🇹🇭 Bangkok

The biggest gay scene in Asia, and here's the part that matters: Black men report being genuinely desired in Bangkok — not the fetish-then-dismissed cycle we know too well. There's a deep bench of long-term Black expats here, plenty partnered with locals or fellow expats. Silom is the heartbeat: Soi 4 for bars, DJ Station for the party, and a brunch scene for the morning after the morning after.

🏨 Gay-friendly stays:

  • W Bangkok — on Sathorn, minutes from Silom, and the lobby alone is a lewk

  • Pullman Bangkok Hotel G — Silom staple, walking distance to Soi 4

  • SO/ Bangkok — design-forward with a rooftop pool overlooking Lumpini Park

🎟️ Do this:

🇧🇷 São Paulo & Rio de Janeiro

Brazil has the largest African diaspora on Earth outside Africa — and it shows. This is the destination where Black gay men most consistently report feeling desired AND normal at the same time. Not exotic. Not a unicorn. Just... fine as hell and treated accordingly. Rio is beachy and body-forward (Ipanema's Farme de Amoedo section is the gay beach). São Paulo is the bigger scene and more relationship-coded — it has one of the largest Prides on the planet:

🏨 Gay-friendly stays (Rio):

  • Sol Ipanema — literally steps from the Farme gay beach section; roll out of bed onto the sand

  • Ipanema Inn — boutique, one block back, easier on the coins

  • Hotel Fasano Rio — the splurge; that rooftop pool has seen things

🏨 Gay-friendly stays (São Paulo):

🎟️ Do this:

🇵🇹 Lisbon

The sneaky riser. A growing Black American expat community, plus Cape Verdean and Angolan diaspora that's been woven into the city for generations — you are not new here, and that changes everything. The gay scene (Príncipe Real) is chill and date-y rather than a hookup machine. This is the "meet somebody at a wine bar and text your group chat OMG" city.

🏨 Gay-friendly stays:

🎟️ Do this:

🇬🇧 London & 🇫🇷 Paris

If your specific goal is dating BLACK men abroad, these two are the top of the list, period. The diaspora depth is unmatched — Caribbean and African communities that built their own Black queer scenes rather than borrowing a corner of somebody else's. UK Black Pride is the largest celebration of its kind in Europe, and both cities have Afro-queer club nights where the playlist alone will heal you.

🏨 Gay-friendly stays (London):

  • Z Hotel Soho — tiny rooms, unbeatable location in the middle of gay Soho, saves your coins for going out

  • Ham Yard Hotel — the Soho splurge

🏨 Gay-friendly stays (Paris):

🎟️ Do this:

🇿🇦 Cape Town

South Africa's constitution protects us on paper better than most of the world — the double check passes legally. And there's a real Black queer social scene. The honest caveat travelers report: the scene can feel segregated in practice, so finding your people takes intention. But the people are THERE, and Black queer Capetonian community is real once you're in it. De Waterkant is the gay village.

PART TWO: The Hookup Spots (Grown Folks Section)

You didn't come this far for me to be coy. Different map, different energy:

🇲🇽 Puerto Vallarta — Still the undisputed champion of the Americas, and I lived there, so this is not secondhand. Zona Romántica is a self-contained gay universe: beach by day, bars by night, and the walk home is never long. My entire PV guide exists because of this city.

🇹🇭 Bangkok — The apps are ALIVE at every hour, the sauna scene is legendary, and the whole city runs on "why not." (Hotels + tours above in Part One — Bangkok plays both sides of this list. Versatile, if you will.)

🇩🇪 Berlin — The most sexually unbothered city on Earth. Dark rooms, no-shame culture, parties that end Tuesday. Real talk for us specifically: Black men report a mix of genuine desire and fetish energy here — the infrastructure is a 10, the "am I a person to you?" score varies by room.

🇪🇸 Madrid, Barcelona & Sitges — Chueca in Madrid is an entire gay district, not a gay street. And in summer, Sitges (40 min from Barcelona) becomes a full gay beach-town takeover.

🇧🇷 Rio — The beach IS the app. Farme de Amoedo, a speedo, and confidence. That's it, that's the strategy. (Stays + tours in Part One.)

🇹🇼 Taipei — Asia's most underrated. Marriage equality, a massive Pride, the Red House bar district, and a scene that's friendly to visitors instead of cliquey.

All hotel and tour links on this page support the blog at no extra cost to you. That's the hustle, transparently. Double-check current availability — hotels change, the tea stays hot.

PART THREE: The Real Talk (Read This Before You Land)

  • Grindr abroad is intel, not just intimacy. Locals on the apps will tell you what's actually safe, which neighborhood is really the move, and where Saturday is happening — better than any blog, including mine.

  • But: apps are for green-light countries ONLY. In hostile countries — the Gulf, Egypt, and others from the warning list — authorities have used dating apps for entrapment. That's documented, not paranoia. If a country failed the Double Check, the apps stay closed. No exceptions, no "just looking."

  • Ask yourself two different questions. "Where am I desired?" and "Where am I respected?" are NOT the same question. Some cities pass one and flop the other. The cities in Part One pass both — that's why they're the love map and not just the fun map.

  • Desired ≠ fetishized. You'll feel the difference within one conversation. Being somebody's whole meal is beautiful. Being somebody's "first" checkbox is not. Trust the ick.

The Bottom Line (hehe)

The world is not just a list of warnings for us. For every country that would erase you, there's a city where a whole community is waiting on you to pull up. Black gay men are falling in love in Mexico City, building lives in Bangkok, getting their whole souls affirmed in Brazil, and having an EXCELLENT time in Puerto Vallarta.

Run both checks. Then go get chose!
