Europe has no shortage of beaches where you can ditch the swimsuit, soak up some sun, and maybe meet a few interesting people while you’re at it. But if you’re looking specifically for beaches with a strong gay following, clothing-optional areas, or both, there are a handful that consistently stand out.

From the massive dunes of Maspalomas to the party atmosphere of Mykonos and the laid-back naturist culture of Portugal, these are 10 of the best gay and nude beaches in Europe to put on your summer travel list.

And yes, some are much more explicitly gay than others. A few are established gay beach destinations, while others are naturist beaches that have developed a strong LGBTQ+ following over the years.

1. Maspalomas Gay Beach — Gran Canaria, Spain

If you’ve spent any time looking at gay travel in Europe, you’ve probably heard of Maspalomas.

The beach stretches for miles along the southern coast of Gran Canaria, backed by the spectacular Maspalomas Dunes. The combination of warm weather, enormous sandy beaches, a huge gay tourism scene, and clothing-optional areas makes this one of the most famous gay beach destinations in Europe.

The gay scene is particularly concentrated around the dunes and the stretch of beach between Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés. You’ll find plenty of gay men here, especially during the summer and around the island’s major LGBTQ+ events.

One of the best things about Maspalomas is that the beach is only part of the experience. Once the sun goes down, Playa del Inglés has one of Europe’s biggest gay nightlife scenes, centered around the Yumbo Centre.

So you can spend the afternoon naked on the beach and end the night dancing at a gay bar without ever needing to leave the area.

2. Es Cavallet — Ibiza, Spain

Es Cavallet is one of those beaches that manages to combine beautiful Mediterranean scenery with a very recognizable LGBTQ+ beach culture.

Located within the Ses Salines Natural Park in southern Ibiza, Es Cavallet is a long, sandy naturist beach surrounded by dunes and vegetation. It is particularly popular with gay men and has become one of the island's best-known LGBTQ+ beach destinations.

The atmosphere is generally relaxed, social, and very Ibiza. You’ll find a mix of gay and straight travelers, nude and clothed sunbathers, and plenty of people who are there simply to spend the day looking fabulous in the sunshine.

There are also beach restaurants and chiringuitos nearby, making it easy to turn your beach day into an all-day affair.

And obviously, this is Ibiza, so you’re not exactly limited to the beach. Ibiza Town, Playa d’en Bossa, and the island’s legendary nightlife are all within easy reach.

3. Bassa Rodona — Sitges, Spain

Sitges has been a gay beach destination for decades, so it should come as absolutely no surprise that one of its central beaches makes this list.

Bassa Rodona sits right along the Sitges waterfront and is widely known as the town’s gay beach. Unlike some of the more remote nude beaches on this list, Bassa Rodona is incredibly convenient. You’re basically in the middle of Sitges.

The beach is relatively compact, with beach chairs, umbrellas, a chiringuito, water activities and other services nearby.

And that's part of what makes Sitges so much fun. You don't have to choose between beach life and nightlife. You can spend the afternoon at Bassa Rodona, walk back into town, shower, grab dinner, and be at the gay bars within minutes.

If you want your gay beach vacation to be social, walkable, and easy, Sitges is hard to beat.

4. Elia Beach — Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos has long been one of Europe's most famous gay vacation destinations, and Elia Beach is a huge reason why.

Located on the southern coast of Mykonos, Elia is a large sandy beach with a particularly strong LGBTQ+ following. The gay section is toward one end of the beach, and as you continue farther along the coastline, you'll find areas where nudism is common.

The vibe here is more upscale beach club than deserted naturist beach. Expect sunbeds, umbrellas, drinks, food service and plenty of people who have clearly put some thought into their vacation wardrobe — even though they're eventually going to take it all off.

Elia is also beautiful. The water is clear, the sand is soft, and the surrounding hills make for some seriously good Mediterranean scenery.

Just keep in mind that Mykonos can get expensive quickly, especially during peak summer.

5. Beach 19 — Costa da Caparica, Portugal

Beach 19 is one of Europe's classic gay nude beaches — and one of the most interesting if you want something that feels a little less polished and resort-like.

Also known as Praia da Bela Vista, Beach 19 is located at the southern end of Costa da Caparica, just outside Lisbon.

The beach is long, sandy and backed by dunes and pine forest. It has a reputation as Portugal's most famous gay beach and has been attracting gay beachgoers for decades.

Unlike Elia or Maspalomas, don't come here expecting a luxury beach club. This is much more laid-back and natural. Bring water, sunscreen and whatever else you need for the day.

One of the fun quirks is that the beach can be reached by the seasonal beach train that runs along Costa da Caparica. Beach 19 is the final stop, which makes getting there part of the experience.

6. Mar Bella — Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona gives you something a little different: a gay-friendly, naturist beach that is actually inside a major European city.

Mar Bella is located in the Sant Martí district and is one of Barcelona's most popular beaches. It has a designated naturist section and attracts a young, international and LGBTQ+-friendly crowd.

The beach itself has plenty of facilities, including showers, toilets, restaurants, beach bars, loungers and water activities.

This is a particularly good option if you're the kind of traveler who wants to spend the morning sightseeing, hit the beach in the afternoon, and then head back into the city for dinner and drinks.

7. Capocotta — Rome, Italy

Yes, you can combine Rome with a nude beach.

Capocotta is located on the Roman coast between Ostia and Torvaianica, outside the historic center of Rome. It's a long stretch of sandy beach backed by dunes and Mediterranean vegetation, and it includes a designated naturist area.

The beach has a much more natural feel than the city beaches closer to central Rome. There are also beach facilities, bars and places to grab food.

Capocotta has historically attracted a strong LGBTQ+ following, particularly around the area sometimes referred to as Il Buco, alongside the naturist section.

The biggest thing to know is that this is not a beach you casually walk to from the Colosseum. You'll want to plan transportation and give yourself enough time to enjoy the area.

8. Zandvoort South — Zandvoort, Netherlands

If you want a nude beach experience that feels very European, Zandvoort is worth knowing about.

Zandvoort is a popular seaside town just outside Amsterdam, and the southern section of the beach is designated for nudism. The nude beach runs between beach posts 68 and 71 and is one of the Netherlands' most popular naturist beaches.

The beach is enormous, sandy and open, with several beach pavilions where you can grab food and drinks.

It's not exclusively gay, but the relaxed Dutch attitude toward nudity makes the area welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. And because you're in Zandvoort, you can easily combine your beach day with a trip to Amsterdam or Haarlem.

This is a particularly good option if you're looking for something less clubby and more genuinely European beach culture.

9. Punta della Suina — Gallipoli, Italy

Punta della Suina is one of those beaches that looks almost suspiciously perfect.

Located inside the Punta Pizzo nature park near Gallipoli in Puglia, the beach combines turquoise water, pine forest, sandy coves and flat rocks along the Ionian coast.

It has a long-standing naturist following in some of the more secluded sections around Punta della Suina and Lido Pizzo, and it is popular with LGBTQ+ travelers visiting the Gallipoli area.

One important distinction: Punta della Suina itself is not an officially designated nudist beach. The naturist tradition is associated with more secluded stretches of the surrounding coastline.

That said, the setting is gorgeous enough that even if you keep your swimsuit on, you're still going to have a great beach day. The water is shallow and exceptionally clear, and the combination of sand, rocks and pine trees gives the whole place a very different feel from the big European gay beach destinations.

10. Għajn Tuffieħa Bay — Malta

Għajn Tuffieħa is probably the wild card on this list.

Unlike some of the other destinations here, Malta doesn't have an officially designated nude beach. Għajn Tuffieħa is a beautiful, relatively secluded bay on Malta's northwest coast, and some of the more secluded areas have developed a clothing-optional and queer following.

Getting there requires walking down a long staircase from the cliffs, so this isn't necessarily the place to bring a giant beach bag packed with half your apartment.

But the payoff is gorgeous.

The bay is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and red-golden sand, and the water is beautifully clear. It's considerably more natural and secluded than some of Malta's busier beaches.

If you're looking for a beach day that feels more adventurous than resort-y, this one is worth checking out.

So, Which European Gay Beach Should You Visit?

The answer really depends on what kind of beach vacation you're looking for.

If you want the full gay vacation experience — beach during the day, gay bars and clubs at night — Maspalomas and Sitges are obvious choices.

If you want beautiful Mediterranean scenery with a strong gay crowd, look at Elia Beach in Mykonos or Es Cavallet in Ibiza.

If you want a more traditional nude beach experience, Beach 19 in Portugal, Capocotta in Rome and Zandvoort South are worth putting on your list.

And if you want something a little more adventurous and less polished, Punta della Suina or Għajn Tuffieħa can give you a completely different European beach experience.

The other thing I love about these destinations is that being nude isn't necessarily the entire point. In many cases, the beaches are simply places where people have created a culture around being comfortable, social and unapologetically themselves.

So pack the sunscreen. Maybe pack a swimsuit.

And maybe don't pack anything else.
