Is Puerto Vallarta worth visiting? Absolutely. And honestly, I'm biased, because PV was SO good to me. My first trip there was about four years ago, in January. I came for a little bit, then I extended. Then I extended again. I think I extended like three times. It's one of those places where you show up for the first time, look around and go, "What the fuck is this?" Because this place is amazing, and it has everything.

So no, this isn't a "I spent a weekend at an all-inclusive" take. Here's what I actually think after spending real time there.

Why Puerto Vallarta Hit Different for Me

There's a sense of comfort in PV that's hard to explain until you're there. You're in Mexico, the culture is Mexican, the food is Mexican, but you still feel close to home. You don't feel too far away. If you're coming from the US or Canada, the flight is short, a lot of people speak English, and you can figure things out pretty quickly without feeling completely lost.

And for me, this was literally the trip that got me addicted to travel again. It set it all off. So if you're someone who's a little scared to travel, or you haven't left the country in a while and you're nervous about it, PV is the perfect gay paradise to ease you back in. It's the place to unleash the dragon, so to speak.

What I Loved About Puerto Vallarta

The vibes. The people are nice, the food is great, the bars are awesome, and the drag is INCREDIBLE. And just being around so many gay people? I love that. I love gays. I love us. If you want to see what I'm talking about, check out my guide to the best drag shows in Puerto Vallarta and my Ultimate Gay Men’s Guide to PV.

There's a real sense of community there, too. You've got Black people, you've got Mexicans, and chile, you've got a LOT of white folks. You've got old, young and everything in between. So many different body types. That's honestly what I love most about PV, the people who come back year after year. It just thrives.

I also loved my apartment, for the most part. I was in the Zona Romántica with a rooftop pool, and I could walk to pretty much everything. That location is hard to beat. If you're trying to figure out what area is right for you, I broke it all down in where to stay in Puerto Vallarta.

What Annoyed Me

Stupid tourists. Specifically the rude ones, and yes, a lot of times that means the racist, MAGA-supporting tourists who still think they can come to Mexico and act however they want. They make it look worse for all of us. People who won't move out of the way on the sidewalk, people who are loud and saying ignorant stuff out loud... Listen, I'm loud too. But it's controlled loudness. You know where to be loud and where not to be.

The pigeons on the beach. I can't stand the pigeons on the beach. To be fair, I hate pigeons on every beach, but still.

And my apartment, which I loved, was great until it wasn't. I paid $1,000 a month, which is high for PV, and one time it flooded. Then my landlord rented out the front area to a woman who opened a shop there, and the construction was LOUD. She was inconsiderate, it was noisy at night, and she caught an attitude with me once. Let's just say I will never be supporting that business. But here's the lesson: it's not your property. You're in a landlord situation, and you know how landlords can be in America. In another country, you have even less leverage. Would I live in that exact area again? Probably not. It's a little expensive, so next time I'd look for something cheaper.

It's Mexico, Not America (And That's the Point)

Mexico is not a "third world country," but it's also not America, so don't come expecting everything to work exactly like it does back home. The infrastructure is different. Things might break. Things might go wrong. You might lose something. I lost my wallet there, and I wrote about the whole thing in I Lost My Wallet in Mexico. One year my phone got wet. You might lose a debit card, or get shaken up, or have something taken. Things happen.

But you go with the flow. And I really believe that if you respect Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta will respect you and give you back what you came for. If safety is on your mind after everything that happened this year, I break it all down in Is Puerto Vallarta Safe in 2026?, and if you're flying into PVR, here's exactly where to catch an Uber from the airport.

Who Puerto Vallarta Is NOT For

The people I just described. If you're coming down here with that rude, entitled, MAGA energy, being disrespectful to locals and acting like you own the place... stay home. Mexico doesn't need you. Period.

Who Will LOVE Puerto Vallarta

Gay travelers, obviously. Solo travelers. Couples. People who are nervous about traveling again and want somewhere that feels exciting but still comfortable. And anybody who wants beach, nightlife, great food and a real community all in one place. For ideas on how to fill your days, here are 21 things to do in Puerto Vallarta.

How Many Days Do You Need in Puerto Vallarta?

It depends on how much time you've got. For a quick weekend getaway, do four days. But if you can stay longer, do a month. A month on the beach in PV during high season? Twenty stars out of twenty. Literally the best. And if you really want to stretch it out, US and Canadian visitors can be given up to 180 days in Mexico as tourists, though immigration decides how many days you actually get, so don't assume you'll automatically get the full six months.
