21 Things to Do in Puerto Vallarta (From Someone Who Actually Lives Here)

Welcome to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!

For the past 3 years or so I have absolutely fallen in LOVE with Puerto Vallarta. From its charming architecture to its people to its endless amounts of great food, things to do, and places to explore — this place is magical.

People always ask me, “Nick, what should we do when we’re in Puerto Vallarta?” Well, A LOT can be said. A LOT can be done. But of course, it all depends on who you are, and what you ultimately want to do. Do you want to just sit by the pool or the beach and relax? Or are you looking for more of an adventure? Or, maybe a mix of both!? Well, don’t worry. I think after you read this list of options for you, you’ll be set.

But first, I wanted to recommend you picking up my Puerto Vallarta travel guide, as I know its jammed pack with even more ideas. 50 pages, in fact. Check it out here and get to planning your trip. .

This list isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the right things, in the right order, without exhausting yourself or falling into tourist traps. And, I’m saving one of my FAVORITES for last… so make sure you make it to the end!

Let’s get into it…

1. Start With the Malecón (Because Everyone Does — and That’s Okay)

Enjoy a nice sunset along the Malecon

The Malecón is PV’s main character. It is basically where everyone meets up, including the vendors, tourists, and locals. Ocean views, street performers, sculptures, vendors, chaos, calm — all of it. Walk it during the day, walk it at sunset, walk it again at night when it turns into something else entirely.

There may be crowds from time to time but its a total vibe. Especially during the holidays or high season nights and weekends.

2. Lose Track of Time in Zona Romántica

The streets are all cobblestoned, as pictured, which lends itself to a hazard and also a rustic look.

This is where most people actually end up spending their time.

Zona Romántica has the best mix of cafés, taco stands, boutique shopping, bars, and people-watching. Wander the side streets. Sit somewhere longer than you planned. Let the day unfold.

If you’re LGBTQ+, this area especially feels like home base. If you’re looking for the perfect hotel to stay that’s LGBTQ+ friendly, please look below at the map or click here for. detailed reviews.

3. Do a Beach Day That’s Not Just Playa Los Muertos

Playa Colomitos accessible by hiking from Boca, you can watch this video about this hike

Playa Los Muertos is convenient and social, but PV shines when you go just a bit further.

Las Gemelas, Conchas Chinas, Palmares — all quieter, cleaner, and more scenic. Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks. You’ll thank yourself. And, if you’re feeling really adventurous take a hike to Las Animas…

More reviews of the BEST all-inclusive hotels can be found here.

4. Take a Water Taxi Somewhere Random

Me and my friend’s kiddo (Asher) as pictured on Las Animas swingin’ on a swing

One of the easiest ways to feel like you’re really on vacation is hopping on a water taxi.

Yelapa, Quimixto, Las Ánimas — pick one. They’re slower, simpler, and remind you that PV isn’t just a city, it’s a coastline.

5. Eat Tacos… Then Eat More Tacos

As pictured at Sonorita’s Tacos, I love it there! Get the list of my other favorites here.

Yes, Pancho’s Takos is famous. Yes, it’s good. No, it’s not the only option.

There are incredible taco spots all over Zona Romántica and beyond — al pastor, seafood, breakfast tacos, baked potatoes stuffed with meat (don’t ask, just order). Eat standing up. Eat late. Eat twice in one night.

This is not the city to be shy about food. Here are my favorite taco spots. Also, take a taco tour, my favorite is through Vallarta Eats (tell them I sent you, and use my code NICK10 for a discount, get more of my favorite tours here.

6. Watch the Sunset From Literally Anywhere Facing West

Best photo spot is by Mantamar and the seahorse statue

PV sunsets don’t need a reservation.

Beach clubs, rooftops, random benches, the Malecón — just make sure you pause and actually watch. The sky does the most here.

7. Take a Boat Cruise (Yes, Even If You Think You’re Not a “Tour” Person)

Friends rented a huge yacht and took it out for the day, I think this may be one of my favorite activities. DRINK WATER!

Catamaran cruises are popular for a reason: unlimited drinks, music, swimming, views of the bay you don’t get from land.

If you’re here between December and March, whale watching is non-negotiable. Seeing them breach never gets old.

8. Go Into the Jungle (PV Is Not Just a Beach Town)

My BFF Joshua and I went ATV riding, and it was a MF blast!

Zip-lining, ATVs, waterfall hikes — PV’s jungle side surprises a lot of people.

You don’t have to do the most extreme version of everything. Even a short jungle excursion shifts your whole perspective of the area.

9. Visit the Vallarta Botanical Gardens

These gardens are absolutely STUNNING!!! Its a must see.

This is one of my favorite “slow days” activities.

It’s lush, peaceful, and a complete contrast to the beach scene. Wander, take photos, and dip into the river if it’s hot. Wear real shoes.

10. Wander an Outdoor Market

The unique finds you can get your hands on are truly endless.

From weekend markets to pop-up stalls in parks, this is where you find handmade jewelry, art, woven bags, and things you didn’t plan to buy but absolutely will.

Don’t forget the pesos, and don’t be afraid to haggle. Check out the Tianguis, too.

11. Eat Seafood Somewhere That Doesn’t Look Fancy

As seen in the seafood market of 5 de Diciembre

Some of the best seafood in PV comes from places that close early and don’t care about Instagram.

Fish tacos, shrimp tacos, ceviche — if locals are eating there, you’re in the right place.

12. Take a Walking Tour (Even If You Think You Know the City)

The City offers free tours, more information here.

Free walking tours give context — history, architecture, stories you’d never catch on your own.

It’s also a great way to orient yourself early in the trip.

Post will continue after this….

I hope you’re enjoying this post, I wanted to let you know about my Puerto Vallarta Guide… The guide is 50 pages and has everything you need to know about PV. Take a look at the product page for more of what it offers and I hope you’ll grab it TODAY (Because the price will be going up soon)!

13. Do a Day Trip You Almost Skip

Sayulita, San Pancho, and Yelapa are all some of my faves!

Sayulita. San Pancho. Yelapa.

Even if you love PV, stepping outside of it for a day makes you appreciate it more when you come back.

14. Experience the Nightlife at Least Once

Whether that’s a chill cocktail bar, live music, drag shows, or dancing until you’re questioning your life choices — PV nightlife has range.

You don’t have to go hard every night. But one night? Absolutely.

15. Have a “Do Nothing” Day

Baby if it’s one thing about me, I’m in a hammock as often as possible.

This is important.

No plans. No reservations. Coffee, beach, food, nap, repeat. Some of my favorite PV days have been the least productive. Find a hammock…

16. Try a Mezcal or Tequila Tasting

I am a lover of Tequila and Mezcal. :)

Not shots. Tastings.

You’ll learn the difference, appreciate the craft, and probably leave with a new favorite you didn’t expect.

17. Take a Cooking Class or Food Tour

Recently I went on the “Feed the Bears” tour with Kevin and Vallarta Eats… They are my favorite tour company!

This is a great way to understand the flavors beyond what’s on your plate.

Plus, you get to eat… again. Check out my favorite tours here.

18. Explore Versailles (If You Want a Local Feel)

I’m always enjoying food here!

Versailles is where a lot of great food spots live now, especially international cuisine.

It feels less touristy and more everyday PV. Two of my favorite restaurants are there, TukTuks or Las Ninfas.

19. Go Somewhere Early — Before Everyone Else Wakes Up

The sunrise and sunset here are my favorites.

Morning walks, early beach time, quiet coffee moments — PV before 9am is a different city.

If you’re up early one day, take advantage.

20. Let Yourself Fall Into a Routine

TBH Or don’t. Just enjoy life!

The real magic of Puerto Vallarta isn’t checking things off a list — it’s finding your spots.

Your coffee place. Your taco stand. Your sunset bench. Once that happens, you’ll understand why so many people come for a week… and stay much longer.

21. Hike the Mirador

It’s a tough one but worth the view!

I just love going up here and seeing the entire city from afar, if you’re lucky and here during whale season, you may spot a whale splashing about or a delectable sunset! Trust me, its a must do. But its not for the weak. Its basically STRAIGHT UP… so bring good shoes and a lot of water and energy!

In closing

Puerto Vallarta gives you options — adventure or rest, chaos or calm, beach or jungle, tacos or… more tacos.

There’s no wrong way to do it. Just don’t rush it.

And trust me — you’ll already be planning your return before you leave. Check out the videos below for more information and tips and tricks:
