The 15 Best Gay Islands in the World
There are gay-friendly cities. There are gay beaches. And then there are islands where the entire vacation feels like it was made for gay travelers.
I'm talking about places where you can spend the afternoon at the beach, meet other LGBTQ travelers, head to a gay bar or beach club at night, and wake up the next morning wondering why you haven't booked another week.
Some of these islands have been gay travel destinations for decades. Others have developed LGBTQ scenes more recently. And they're not all offering the same kind of vacation.
Mykonos is about luxury, beach clubs and partying. Fire Island is about community. Phuket gives you tropical beaches and a major gay nightlife scene. Puerto Rico gives you Caribbean beaches, culture and nightlife. And then there are islands like Maui and Curaçao, where the gay scene is more of a bonus to an already incredible vacation.
So if you're looking for your next gay island escape, these are the places I'd put on your radar.
1. Mykonos, Greece 🇬🇷
Best for: Gay partying, beach clubs and luxury
If you asked me to name the most famous gay island in the world, Mykonos would probably be the first answer.
For decades, the Greek island has attracted LGBTQ travelers looking for beautiful beaches, late nights, luxury hotels and a vacation where being gay isn't something you have to think twice about.
Super Paradise and Elia are two of the beaches most associated with the island's LGBTQ scene, while Mykonos Town gives you bars, restaurants and nightlife packed into one gorgeous little maze of whitewashed buildings.
The catch is the price. Mykonos can get very expensive in the summer, particularly once you start adding beach clubs, cocktails and luxury hotels to the bill.
But if you're looking for that classic Mediterranean gay vacation — beautiful men, beautiful beaches, boats, cocktails and questionable decisions at 3 a.m. — Mykonos remains one of the world's greats.

Mykonos Theoxenia: A stylish Design Hotels property right by the famous windmills and Little Venice.

2. Gran Canaria, Spain 🇪🇸
Best for: The best all-around gay island
Gran Canaria might actually be the best overall gay island on this list.
The island has something that many gay destinations struggle to achieve: a huge LGBTQ tourism infrastructure without making the entire vacation feel like one giant circuit party.
Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés are the center of gay life, with beaches, resorts, bars, clubs and restaurants catering heavily to LGBTQ travelers. The famous Maspalomas dunes have practically become a gay travel landmark.
And because of the island's warm climate, Gran Canaria works particularly well when you need a break from colder European weather.
If you want to party, relax, meet people and have options, this might be your island.

3. Ibiza, Spain 🇪🇸
Best for: Gay nightlife
Ibiza isn't exclusively gay, but honestly, it doesn't need to be.
This is one of the world's great party destinations, and LGBTQ travelers are very much part of the island's ecosystem.
You can spend the afternoon at a beach club, watch the sunset, eat dinner and then find yourself dancing until sunrise.
The vibe is different from Mykonos. Mykonos feels like a luxury gay vacation with nightlife. Ibiza feels like nightlife with an island attached to it.
If going out is the main event, this is your island.

Best for: Gay community
Fire Island is different.
It's not about luxury resorts or international beach clubs. It's about gay people creating their own little world on an island.
Cherry Grove and the Pines have decades of LGBTQ history, and during the summer the island becomes one of the most recognizable gay vacation destinations in America.
There are no cars in the main communities. You walk along boardwalks, run into people you know — or immediately meet people you don't — and spend your days at the beach before heading out for drinks.
It's less "luxury gay resort" and more gay summer camp for adults.
And that's exactly why people keep coming back.

5. Phuket, Thailand 🇹🇭
Best for: Tropical beaches + gay nightlife
Phuket gives you something that Mykonos and Fire Island can't: Southeast Asian tropical energy.
Thailand has long been one of Asia's most LGBTQ-friendly destinations, and Phuket combines that welcoming atmosphere with spectacular beaches, resorts, food and nightlife.
Patong is where you'll find the island's biggest concentration of gay nightlife, particularly around Paradise Complex.
But that's what makes Phuket so good.
You can spend the morning island-hopping, get a massage in the afternoon, hit the beach for sunset and then head into Patong when you're ready to socialize.

The Nature Phuket: A modern resort just outside Patong with multiple pools and easy access to the gay nightlife.
The Kee Resort & Spa: A very convenient Patong base right near Bangla Road and the center of the action.
Amari Phuket: A polished beachfront resort with ocean views, pools and a spa.

Hotel Indigo Phuket Patong: A stylish boutique hotel close to Patong's restaurants, nightlife and beach.
6. Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Best for: Gay Caribbean culture
Puerto Rico might be the most complete Caribbean option for LGBTQ travelers.
And I say that because you're not just getting a beach.
You've got San Juan's nightlife, historic architecture, incredible food, LGBTQ-friendly businesses, beaches, rainforest, mountains and smaller islands to explore.
And for Americans, there's another major advantage:
You don't need a passport.
That makes Puerto Rico ridiculously easy for a spontaneous gay getaway.
For Black gay travelers, I also think Puerto Rico deserves extra attention because you're getting a Caribbean culture with deep African, Spanish and Taíno influences.

La Concha Resort: A stylish beachfront resort in Condado that's popular with LGBTQ travelers.

7. Curaçao 🇨🇼
Best for: A relaxed Caribbean gay getaway
Curaçao is one of those destinations I think more gay travelers need to put on their radar.
The island is colorful, relaxed and easy to explore, with Willemstad, beautiful beaches, snorkeling and diving all packed into a relatively manageable destination.
It's not trying to be another Puerto Rico or Miami.
And that's part of the appeal.
Curaçao works particularly well if you want to actually relax while still being somewhere that's welcoming to LGBTQ travelers.

Best for: Gay history + laid-back partying
Key West has been attracting LGBTQ travelers for decades, and it still has that unmistakable "come as you are" energy.
It's smaller and more intimate than Miami, which is part of its charm.
You can walk around town, hang out by the water, visit LGBTQ landmarks, grab drinks and easily turn a casual afternoon into a full night out.
And unlike many destinations on this list, Key West has a legitimately impressive selection of gay-specific accommodations.

Island House Key West: A men-focused, clothing-optional resort that's been part of Key West's gay scene for decades.
Equator Resort: A men-only, clothing-optional property with pools and a very social atmosphere.
New Orleans House: A gay male guesthouse directly on Duval Street with a pool and clothing-optional sundeck.
La Te Da: An adults-only boutique hotel on Duval Street with a restaurant, bar and pool.
9. Bali, Indonesia 🇮🇩
Best for: Wellness, romance and tropical luxury
Bali isn't a traditional "gay island" in the same way Mykonos or Fire Island is, but it has developed a significant LGBTQ tourism ecosystem, particularly around Seminyak.
This is where I'd go if your ideal gay vacation involves beautiful villas, massages, great food, beach clubs and getting your life together for approximately 72 hours before ruining it at brunch.
Bali works particularly well for couples and solo travelers who want a more relaxed experience.
The important caveat is that Indonesia's legal and cultural environment is more complicated than the destinations above, so travelers should understand local laws and customs before going.

10. Oahu, Hawaii 🇺🇸
Best for: Beaches + city life
Oahu is one of my favorite choices for someone who wants a gay vacation without spending the entire trip in a gay bubble.
Honolulu gives you restaurants, nightlife, shopping and LGBTQ-friendly businesses, while the rest of the island gives you beaches, hikes, mountains and ridiculously beautiful scenery.
The biggest advantage is variety.
You can go from a gay bar in Waikīkī to hiking in the mountains to swimming in the ocean all in the same day.

11. Maui, Hawaii 🇺🇸
Best for: A romantic gay escape
If Oahu is the social Hawaiian island, Maui is the "let's disappear for a week" island.
It's more relaxed, more resort-oriented and particularly good for couples.
The beaches are spectacular, the resorts are beautiful and there's plenty to do without needing to be surrounded by nightlife every night.
For a honeymoon, anniversary or romantic trip with another man, Maui makes a lot of sense.

12. Aruba 🇦🇼
Best for: An easy Caribbean getaway
Aruba is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to recommend to LGBTQ travelers.
The appeal here is simplicity.
Beautiful beaches. Resorts. Warm weather. Restaurants. Water activities. A relatively easy vacation.
The LGBTQ scene isn't on the scale of Puerto Rico or Mykonos, but you don't necessarily need it to be.
Aruba works if you want to relax, look good in a swimsuit and drink something expensive near the ocean.
Honestly, sometimes that's enough.

If Phuket sounds a little too busy for you, look at Koh Samui.

It's particularly good for couples or solo travelers who want to meet people without feeling like they need to be in a club every night.
Koh Samui is the island I'd choose when I want Thailand but don't want to feel like I'm on a nonstop party vacation.

The LGBTQ scene isn't huge, which is the obvious drawback, but the island works well for couples, groups of friends and travelers who don't need their vacation to revolve around gay nightlife.
Think luxury Caribbean escape, not gay circuit party.

Best for: Adventure
The Big Island is the wildcard on this list. You're not coming here because you want the biggest gay nightlife scene. You're coming because you want to do something.
Volcanoes. Black-sand beaches. Snorkeling. Hiking. Stargazing. Waterfalls. Road trips.
It's an excellent option for the gay traveler who would rather rent a car and explore an island for a week than spend seven days at a resort.
And that's what makes the Big Island special. The gay scene is secondary. The island itself is the experience.

So, Which Gay Island Is Actually the Best?
Honestly? It depends on what kind of gay vacation you're looking for. If you want the quintessential gay island experience, I'd pick Mykonos.
If you want the island with perhaps the best combination of LGBTQ infrastructure, beaches, nightlife and year-round appeal, Gran Canaria might actually take the crown.
If you're looking for community, Fire Island is hard to beat.
If you want tropical beaches plus gay nightlife, I'd go with Phuket.
For the Caribbean, Puerto Rico would be my first choice, with Curaçao and Aruba right behind it. And if you're looking for something more romantic and relaxed, I'd choose Maui, Curaçao or Koh Samui.
But here's what I love about this list: you don't have to be looking for the same vacation everyone else is having.
Maybe you want to party until sunrise…Maybe you want to spend a week naked on a beach….Maybe you want a boyfriend and a villa…Maybe you want to meet 30 new gay friends….Or maybe you just want to sit somewhere beautiful, drink something cold and not answer anybody's texts. There's an island for that.

A Note for Black Gay Travelers
One thing I'd be careful about when reading a list like this: "gay-friendly" doesn't automatically mean the experience is the same for every gay traveler.
An island can have tons of gay tourists and still not necessarily have much Black gay representation. That's particularly worth considering if you're traveling solo and hoping to meet other Black gay men.
