Where to Stay in Colombo: The Best Hotels (and Which Area Is Right for You)
Okay so here's the thing about Colombo: most people treat it like a layover. You land at the airport, you sleep one night, and you're out the door to Galle, Ella or the beach before you've even tasted a proper kottu. And honestly? I get it. But Colombo has some of the most affordable luxury hotels I've seen anywhere, and if you pick the right one, it's a whole vibe on its own.
I'm heading to Colombo myself, and I'm booked at the Taj Samudra, right across from Galle Face Green. So I went DEEP on the hotels here, because I wanted to know what I was getting into and where I'd send y'all depending on what kind of trip you're trying to have. This guide is that research. Where I'm staying, where I'd stay next, and which part of the city makes sense for you.
I'll update this post with my honest review once I've actually checked out, so bookmark it.
Where Should You Stay in Colombo?
Colombo is split into numbered districts, and you'll see them everywhere (Colombo 3, Colombo 7, etc.). For a first trip, you really only need to know a few.
Want ocean sunsets and the big-name luxury hotels? Stay around Galle Face, where Colombo 1, 2 and 3 meet the sea. Want to be walking distance to restaurants, bars and shopping? Look at Kollupitiya (Colombo 3). Want quiet, leafy streets, boutique hotels and the fancy embassy-neighborhood energy? That's Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7).
If I'm being real, for most people the answer is Galle Face or Kollupitiya. You're on the water, you're central, and getting anywhere else is a quick tuk-tuk or PickMe ride.

The Best Hotels in Colombo
1. Taj Samudra
Best for: First-timers who want classic luxury and the best sunset location in the city
Where: Galle Face (Colombo 3)
Price: $$
This is where I'm staying, so let me tell you why I picked it. Taj Samudra sits right on Galle Face Centre Road, facing Galle Face Green, which is that long oceanfront promenade where the whole city comes out at sunset to eat street food, fly kites and just exist. You're literally across the street from it.
It's a big, old-school five-star with around 300 rooms, a pool with a poolside bar, tennis courts, a spa and lush gardens, plus a bunch of restaurants on property, including Navratna for Indian food. Rooms face either the Indian Ocean or the city skyline, so if you book here, PLEASE request the ocean side.
And the price for a Taj? In a lot of cities you'd pay double or triple for this name. In Colombo, it's one of the easiest luxury flexes you can make without destroying your budget.
The vibe: Grand, classic Taj hospitality, with the best front yard in Colombo.
2. Shangri-La Colombo
Best for: Pool people and anyone who wants a mall downstairs
Where: Galle Face (Colombo 2)
Price: $$$
If you've seen a photo of a pool with bright yellow umbrellas and the ocean right behind it, that was probably the Shangri-La. This is the one that gives you that "oh, okay, we're doing it BIG" moment the second you walk in.
It sits at the top of the Galle Face strip and is connected to the One Galle Face mall, so food court, shopping and a cinema are right there for the days you don't feel like leaving. Rooms look out over the Indian Ocean, Beira Lake or the city, and there's a spa, multiple restaurants and some of the best sunset views in Colombo.
The vibe: Polished, international and very "send me the pool pic."
3. ITC Ratnadipa
Best for: People who want the newest five-star in the city
Where: Galle Face (Colombo 1)
Price: $$$
ITC Ratnadipa opened in 2024 and it's part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, so this is the brand-new kid on the block. It's basically next door to the Taj on Galle Face Centre Road, in the tall glass towers you'll spot from all over Galle Face Green.
It's got about 350 rooms, suites and serviced apartments, an infinity pool, the Kaya Kalp spa, and around a dozen places to eat and drink. If you're an Indian food person, ITC is known for it. Rooms come with sea or pool views, and a lot of them have balconies.
The vibe: Shiny, new and a little extra, in the best way.
4. Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams
Best for: Big-resort energy in the middle of the city
Where: Beira Lake, near Galle Face (Colombo 2)
Price: $$$
Cinnamon Life is the one everybody's talking about right now. It opened in August 2024 as part of the huge City of Dreams complex, and it's a lot. In a good way. We're talking 800 rooms, three pools, around 15 restaurants and bars, a shopping center and an entertainment complex, all in one futuristic building on the edge of Beira Lake.
It's also one of the highest-rated big hotels in Colombo on Booking.com right now, which tells you people are actually enjoying it and not just taking pictures of the lobby.
The vibe: Vegas meets Singapore, but make it Sri Lanka.
5. Galle Face Hotel
Best for: History lovers and anyone who wants old-world glamour
Where: Galle Face / Kollupitiya (Colombo 3)
Price: $$
This hotel has been open since 1864. Let that sink in. It's one of the oldest hotels in Asia, it sits right on the ocean at the southern end of Galle Face Green, and it has a saltwater pool facing the Indian Ocean that is just... yeah.
It's colonial-style, with hardwood floors, big verandas and most rooms looking out at the ocean, the Green or the city. If the newer towers feel too corporate for you, this is the one with actual character. Go for sundowners on the terrace even if you don't stay here.
The vibe: Old money, ocean breeze, a cocktail in your hand.
Get Travel Insurance Before You Go
Real quick before we keep going. Sri Lanka is one of those places where you'll probably end up on a tuk-tuk, a train hanging out the door, a safari jeep and a boat all in the same trip. Love that for you. But please don't do it without insurance.
Get Travel Insurance (Seriously, Don’t Skip This)
Look, I know insurance isn’t the sexy part of planning a trip. But I promise you do NOT want to be the person paying out of pocket for a hospital visit after a scooter accident, some bad street food, or a surprise trip to the ER in a country where you don’t speak the language. I use SafetyWing because it’s built for people like us who bounce from country to country, and you can sign up even after you’ve already left home.
6. Cinnamon Grand
Best for: Foodies and people who want options without leaving the hotel
Where: Kollupitiya (Colombo 3)
Price: $$
Cinnamon Grand is a Colombo classic. It's a big five-star on Galle Road with about 14 restaurants and bars, a spa, a gym and a huge pool surrounded by tropical gardens, which feels like a whole oasis in the middle of the city.
It's also right next to the Crescat Boulevard mall and a quick ride to everything in Kollupitiya, so it's a really easy base. Some higher-floor rooms even get ocean views.
The vibe: Reliable, central, and you'll eat VERY well.
7. Paradise Road Tintagel
Best for: Couples and boutique-hotel people who hate big lobbies
Where: Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7)
Price: $$$
If big tower hotels aren't your thing, this is your spot. Tintagel is a 1930s colonial mansion on a quiet street in Cinnamon Gardens, turned into a tiny boutique hotel with only about 10 suites. It's run by Paradise Road, the Sri Lankan design brand, so everything is moody, dark wood, black and white, and stupidly chic.
There's a pool, a steam room and a restaurant that people come to even when they're not staying here. It's private, it's calm, and it's one of the highest-rated hotels in Colombo on Booking.com.
The vibe: Quiet luxury. No crowds, no noise, just vibes.
8. Jetwing Colombo Seven
Best for: Longer stays and rooftop-pool lovers
Where: Ward Place, Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7)
Price: $$
Look at that pool. LOOK AT IT. Jetwing Colombo Seven has a rooftop infinity pool with views across the whole city skyline, and that alone would sell me.
It's in Colombo 7, so you're in one of the nicer, greener parts of the city, and they have regular rooms plus studios and apartments with more space, which is great if you're staying a week or working remotely. Jetwing is a Sri Lankan hotel group too, so your money stays local.
The vibe: Modern, calm, and a sunset swim every night.

9. Marino Beach Colombo
Best for: Ocean views on a smaller budget
Where: Marine Drive, Kollupitiya (Colombo 3)
Price: $
Marino Beach is the one I'd tell my friends about when they want the view without the Shangri-La price tag. It sits right on Marine Drive by the sea, and the rooftop infinity pool hangs out over the ocean. It's GORGEOUS at sunset.
It has around 300 rooms, and it has thousands of reviews on Booking.com with a really high score, which is hard to pull off at that size. You're also close to the restaurants and bars in Kollupitiya.
The vibe: Big views, fair prices, everybody's happy.
10. Granbell Hotel Colombo
Best for: Budget-conscious travelers who still want a rooftop pool
Where: Kollupitiya (Colombo 3)
Price: $
Granbell is a four-star, but it's punching above its weight. It's a Japanese-owned hotel on Kollupitiya Road with a rooftop infinity pool and bar looking toward the ocean, plus modern rooms with sea or city views.
For the price, it's one of the best-value stays in the city, and the location puts you right in the middle of the Colpetty restaurant and bar scene.
The vibe: Clean, modern, and your money goes a LONG way.
Colombo Neighborhoods Explained
Galle Face (Colombo 1, 2 & 3)
This is the oceanfront strip, and it's where most of the big luxury hotels are: the Taj, ITC Ratnadipa, Shangri-La, Cinnamon Life and the Galle Face Hotel. Galle Face Green is the main event here, especially in the evening when the street food carts come out and the sky turns pink. If it's your first time in Colombo and you only have a night or two, stay here.
Kollupitiya / Colpetty (Colombo 3)
Just south of Galle Face, Kollupitiya is where you'll find a lot of the city's restaurants, cafés, bars and shopping. It's more lived-in and a little less polished, and a lot of the best-value hotels are here (Cinnamon Grand, Marino Beach, Granbell). Great if you want to walk out and find dinner without planning it.
Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7)
This is the leafy, upscale part of town, with big old houses, embassies, Viharamahadevi Park and the National Museum. It's calmer and quieter, and it's home to some of Colombo's best boutique hotels, like Tintagel. If you want peace and a more local feel, look here.
Fort & Pettah (Colombo 1)
Fort is the old colonial center and business district, and Pettah is next door with the markets. It's busy, hot, chaotic and fun to explore for a day. I wouldn't base myself here unless you're on a tight budget or catching an early train.
Mount Lavinia & Negombo
Mount Lavinia is a beach area about 30 minutes south of the center, if you'd rather be on the sand. Negombo is near the airport, so a lot of people book one night there before an early flight. Both are fine, but you're not really "in" Colombo.

A Quick Note for Black & LGBTQ+ Travelers
I'm not going to pretend otherwise: same-sex relationships are still technically illegal in Sri Lanka under old colonial-era laws. Prosecutions are rare, and Colombo is the most open-minded part of the country, but it's still a conservative place overall. Keep the PDA low-key, be smart on the apps, and know that you won't get the same legal protections you'd have back home.
The good news is that the big international hotels in Colombo are used to guests from everywhere, and booking a king bed as two men at a Taj or a Shangri-La is not going to raise eyebrows. I'll share my own experience as a Black gay man in Colombo once I've been, because that's the part you can't get from a Google search.
Final Thoughts
Colombo is not the city you go to Sri Lanka for. I know that. But it's the city you WILL pass through, and with luxury hotels this affordable, it'd be a waste to just sleep near the airport and leave. Book a night or two on Galle Face, watch the sunset on the Green, eat everything, and then head down the coast.
I'm checking into the Taj Samudra soon, so come back to this post for the real review. And if you've stayed somewhere in Colombo you loved, tell me about it.
FAQ: Where to Stay in Colombo
What is the best area to stay in Colombo?
For most first-time visitors, Galle Face (Colombo 2 and 3) is the best area. You're on the ocean, close to Galle Face Green, and near the city's best luxury hotels. Kollupitiya (Colombo 3) is great if you want more restaurants and bars around you, and Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) is best for a quiet, boutique stay.
Is Taj Samudra a good hotel?
Taj Samudra is a five-star hotel facing Galle Face Green with an outdoor pool, gardens, tennis courts and several restaurants. It gets strong guest reviews, especially for its location. I'm staying there on my trip and will add my own review here after.
How many nights should I stay in Colombo?
One to two nights is enough for most people. That gives you time to see Galle Face Green, the Gangaramaya Temple, Pettah Market and a couple of great restaurants before heading to Galle, Ella, Kandy or the beaches.
Are hotels in Colombo expensive?
Not compared to most capital cities. Colombo has some of the most affordable five-star hotels in Asia, so it's a great place to splurge. Rates go up in peak season (roughly December to March), so book early if you're traveling then.
Is Colombo safe for tourists?
Colombo is generally safe for tourists. Use normal big-city common sense, agree on tuk-tuk fares before you get in (or use the PickMe or Uber apps), and watch your stuff in crowded markets like Pettah.
Is Colombo gay-friendly?
Colombo is the most accepting city in Sri Lanka, but same-sex relationships are still criminalized under the law, even though it's rarely enforced. Most LGBTQ+ travelers visit without problems by keeping things discreet in public. International hotels are generally welcoming.
Where should I stay near Colombo airport?
Bandaranaike International Airport is about 45 minutes to an hour from central Colombo, closer to Negombo. If you have a very early flight, a night in Negombo makes sense. Otherwise, stay in the city and just leave with plenty of time.
